We all waited anxiously and impatienty for the Covid vaccine to be developed, tested and rolled out into the community. As we inch forward to this landmark event, there are several questions that remain largely unanswered .There is also some trepidation about the effectiveness and safety of these vaccines. Let us try to understand what the benefits of the Covid Vaccine could be,and how it would impact our daily life.

-How soon will the Covid vaccine be available?

As per the data and the news reports currently available, the Covid vaccines should be getting ” Emergency Use” approval and be available for the population within the next few weeks.

– Are there many different types of Covid Vaccines that will be available in the market?

At the present time, 2 Indian companies and one multinational company have applied for permission for ” Emergency Use”. Based on the trial data submitted, there could be more than one type of vaccine that may be approved and reach the market.

– Is there any difference between the various vaccine types? Are there any criteria to select a particular type of vaccine that we want to take?

The vaccines are prepared using different methods and with different antigens. However, all the vaccines are effective as per the data that has been published so far from the companies.

There are no specific criteria currently , to choose any particular brand over the other. Whichever brand is available for administration, must be taken.

-Is the vaccine safe for persons with other diseases, like diabetes, kidney ailments, lung and heart diseases etc?

The vaccines are all safe and must be taken, on priority by those individuals who suffer from associated diseases. These associated diseases make the individual more susceptible and at risk of serious effects of corona virus infection.

– After taking the vaccine , can we go back to our previous lifestyle, avoid masks and no physical distancing?

No. Even after taking the vaccine, it is essential to wear masks, sanitize your hands and maintain social distancing. The vaccine will protect you from disease, but will not prevent the spread of infection from you to others in the community. Hence, it is imperative to maintain caution at all times.
